1977 - A.R.E.A. & R.T.A. Ouyen, Pinnaroo

19-11-1977:

Members of the Australian Railway Exploration Association (AREA) combined with the Rail Tourist Association (RTA) for an unusual round trip from Melbourne via Ouyen and Tailem Bend (South Australia) and back to Melbourne. The AREA group in their special train consisting of T346, two carriages and brake van, ran from Melbourne to Ouyen and Ouyen to Pinnaroo. The RTA group in a similar special train ran from Tailem Bend to Pinnaroo. Both trains arrived at Pinnaroo where the passengers changed over trains and completed their round trip.

The Rail Tourist Association train from Tailem Bend, hauled by locomotive 835 had already arrived and reversed its train when the special from Victoria with the Australian Railway Exploration Association arrived. A seemingly mandatory stop for railway enthusiast specials is the border between Victoria and South Australia. The actual border is where the second carriage is standing. T346 is returning to Ouyen with a new group of passengers. 19-11-1977. Photo: Bruce McLean
