1976 - A.R.E.A. Mildura, Yelta

28-12-76 - 30-12-1976:

Members of the Australian Railway Exploration Association (AREA) travelled in three non air-conditioned sleeping cars (Nos. 6, 7 and 8) attached to "The Vinelander" departure from Spencer Street, Melbourne on 28-12-1976. On arrival at Mildura, the three sleeping carriages were attached to the 11.30 a.m. goods train from Mildura to Yelta and return on the 1.45 p.m. goods from Yelta to Mildura. The Down train to Yelta consisted of T361, IA8469, L256, 3LL, L1062, L1414, L1028, Sleeper No. 6, Sleeper No.7, Sleeper No.8 and 40ZF.

On return from Yelta, T361 was again used to transfer freight wagons. A number of wagons were picked up from the goods shed siding and another three vans were shunted from the Aurora Packing Co. siding. 29-12-1976. Photo: Bruce McLean

On arrival at Ballarat on the morning of 30-12-1976, a locomotive was attached and the carriages were run as a special train to Geelong, scheduled to depart Ballarat at 3.20 a.m.. On arrival at Geelong the carriages were transferred to the 6.30 a.m. passenger train from Geelong to Spencer Street.
