Torrita

Origin of name: Aboriginal - little emu.

Station opened: 25-6-1912 as NYANG; 1-10-1921 renamed TORRITA

Distance from Melbourne (via Castlemaine): 312 miles 55 chains 93 links; 503.240 km

Distance from Melbourne (via Ballan): 510.144 km

Height above sea level: 238 feet

Torrita was provided with a 150 foot passenger platform with a cart dock and 17 x 8 foot 6 inches shelter shed with a wooden sleeper floor. A loop goods siding had a 50 x 16 foot goods platform.

A departmental residence was also provided.

Torrita was not included in the 1937/38 allocation of concrete silos along the Murrayville line, but the GEB has constructed three steel silos over the years to receive grain from local farmers.

Torrita was supervised from Ouyen and was closed to passenger traffic from 1-11-1968.
